Seattle Schools Community:

The incident reported after a 2012 Garfield High School field trip is of concern to us all.  We would each be deeply shaken if our child was involved in such an incident. While we cannot undo that event, we can learn from it and take steps to increase the safety for our students.

School leaders gear up for start of school

School leaders cheer during the ball pass activity.Passing a ball using only their feet, rowing a “boat” across the Garfield High School gym floor, and other team-building exercises were just what Seattle Public Schools leaders needed after a long week of planning.

Principals and some teacher leaders spent a week in mid-August attending the District’s School Leadership Institute at Garfield. They are gearing up for the start of school on Sept. 3.

For most of the week, the primary focus was assessments. Washington begins new state tests in reading, writing and math this spring, with Smarter Balanced tests replacing the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) tests in grades 3-8. Volunteering at Seattle Public Schools

Seattle Public Schools is grateful for each parent and community member who contributes to the success of students. We have thousands of volunteers who work in a variety of capacities in Seattle Public Schools.

Itís not too late to register for Kindergarten Jump Start!

During the week of August 18-22, forty-six Seattle elementary schools will offer new Kindergarten students a chance to learn about their new school and get comfortable with teachers and peers.  Some schools will be offering breakfast and lunch; others will provide a snack.  Click here for Jump Start registration forms and flyers, which list participating schools. Return forms to your child’s school as soon as possible or take the forms to school along with your child, on Mon. August 18.

Please note: Transportation is not provided during Jump Start.


Dr. Larry Nyland appointed Interim Superintendent

The Seattle School Board named longtime educator Dr. Larry Nyland during a special meeting July 18 as Interim Superintendent to replace Superintendent José Banda. The Board will conduct a full search with community engagement this fall for a permanent Superintendent. Nyland retired in June 2013 after nine years as the Marysville School District Superintendent.

Seattle Public Schools to host community conversation on possibility of a downtown school

Seattle Public Schools is inviting the public to attend a conversational meeting regarding the possibility of creating a K-5 elementary school in downtown Seattle. This will be similar to a meeting held on July 28 at the Seattle Central Library.

When:  Tuesday, August 12
Where: Belltown Community Center, 415 Bell Street, Seattle
What:  A short presentation on what a downtown school might entail, followed by an informal Q&A with Seattle Public Schools staff.
