On Dec. 15, a community meeting about the future of Cedar Park Elementary School was hosted by Seattle Public Schools staff (see photos). Cedar Park will open as a new option school for the Northeast region of Seattle. This represents an exciting opportunity to design a school that meets the unique needs and values of the community.

Over 70 stakeholders and community members attended the meeting (see the PowerPoint presentation). Also present, representing Seattle Public Schools and leading the conversation were: Kim Whitworth, Executive Director of Schools for the Northeast Region; Principal Dedy Fauntleroy; Michael Tolley, Associate Superintendent for Teaching and Learning and School Board Directors Scott Pinkham and Rick Burke.

Outline of children's hands with writing inside themStaff collected ideas and opinions from families about the type/s of educational programs that should be offered at Cedar Park and potential focus of the new option school. On images of a child's hand, families were asked to share:

  • Their top three priorities for their children's school
  • Two things they most wanted for their children
  • What kind of option school focus they envisioned as a fit for their child and their values
  • Two things their children were interested in, good at or passionate about

Community input will help shape the district’s next steps and development of the new option school’s focus (see a summary of the input collected at the community meeting.) Updates and other related information will be posted on the Cedar Park web page. The next update will be posted in January.

If you were unable to attend the initial visioning meeting, there will be additional opportunities in 2017. In the meantime, if you would like to share your thoughts about the opening of Cedar Park Elementary School, please email cedarpark@seattleschools.org.
