Hazel Wolf K-8 at Pinehurst School building a finalist for Building of the Year award
The Daily Journal of Commerce newspaper annually honors a regional, newly constructed building: the Hazel Wolf K-8 at Pinehurst School building is a finalist for this year’s award. Voting is open at djc.com until Feb. 28.

In 2016, the Hazel Wolf K-8 at Pinehurst School building won second place in the World Architecture News Future Projects Education Awards, which goes to concepts, speculative designs, and projects that are on hold or under construction. NAC Architecture designed Hazel Wolf school at 11530 12th Ave. N.E. and Lydig Construction built it.
The three-story, 83,000-square-foot school opened September 2016 to replace Pinehurst School, which was demolished. The new building can house up to 680 students. NAC said its design won for pushing the boundaries of traditional K-12 programming. Hazel Wolf is a choice school that students opt to attend, with a curriculum based on environmental learning. Students focus studies on STEM: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
The 3.2-acre site is integrated with the structure so that the campus functions as an indoor/outdoor learning lab, with green roofs and terraces. The central courtyard has several teaching areas focused on plantings and storm water management, including a constructed wetland. The courtyard extends up and over the administration area and art room to create more space for outdoor learning.
A botanical garden provides an outdoor laboratory, while a living wall at the main entry displays the school's mission to the community. The school also has a childcare facility.
