Seattle Introducing Students to Maritime Careers While Helping Eliminate Opportunity Gaps
    Posted on 05/08/2017

Seattle Skills Center is teaming up with the Seattle Maritime Academy and Port of Seattle to help train tomorrow's mariners.

At the same time, they are helping eliminate barriers and gaps many students face in the classroom and in life.

Seattle Skills Center is a district program that provides hands-on classes in real-world career fields. This year, the Seattle Skills Center developed a partnership with Seattle Maritime Academy to teach high school students the maritime trade in order to help counter a looming crisis for Seattle’s maritime industry as many workers near retirement age. At the same time, students gain job and life skills they can put to use right after high school or take with them to college.

For many students, enrollment in the Seattle Skills Center also eliminates opportunity gaps by providing them with the tools to break the cycle of generational poverty. Every day, Seattle Public Schools is working with our community partners to help students thrive and eliminate opportunity gaps.

Skills Center is now accepting applications for summer courses and school year courses.
