Task Force for Supplementary K-5 Gender-Identity Materials
Seattle Public Schools is seeking volunteers from schools (K-5) and the community to participate in reviewing and selecting materials which will address portions of the Washington State Reading and Writing standards as well as the new Washington State Health Education standards.
This year-long Task Force will be vetting materials and helping create literacy-based lessons with gender-focused books appropriate for K-5 classrooms. Specifically, the focus will be on gender expression and gender identity. Task Force members will be selected to represent diverse perspectives.
Once the Task Force has evaluated and selected books for this project, they will design corresponding lessons to support teachers in delivering effective instruction aligned to the standards. These lessons will be created this school year then piloted in classrooms in 2017.
The Task Force will meet approximately three full days and one evening between November 2016 and June 2017. Substitutes and extra time will be provided for SPS employees.
