About the Nursing Program

NEW* Mump In Washington State:

Dear School Community,

As you may know, many cases of mumps are showing up in King County. Please watch your students closely for signs and symptoms, including: fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite, and/or swollen, tender salivary glands under the ears on one or both sides. If you notice these in your student, please contact their health care provider immediately. Fortunately, students who have been vaccinated are far less likely to get mumps, and if they do, are less likely to have a severe case. Please ensure that your student has been thoroughly vaccinated. Be advised: there is a possibility that if a case occurs in our school community, students who have not been fully vaccinated may need to be excluded from school for at least 25 days for their own and the community’s safety.

Thank you for your attention. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your school nurse.

What We Do

Nurses work with students, families, and school staff to assure that all children participate fully in Seattle Public Schools educational programs. This begins with daily attendance, being well-rested, well-fed, and ready to learn. Our goal is that all children are successful in school.

Please call your child's school and connect with the nurse if you have any questions about your child's health at school. Check here to find school contact number.

School nurses serve all students enrolled in Seattle Public Schools. The nurse's role is to assure that students receive required screenings, are compliant with immunization laws, have required individual health plans (IHPs) in place, school staff are trained on the essential and, individual needs of students with chronic health conditions.

They support a positive safe school climate, assist the school team in disability accommodations, provide direct nursing care, delegate safe medication administration to school staff, and participate in school health education.

School Based Health Centers

Some of our schools have a School Based Health Center (SBHC) on site that is staffed by an ARNP, counselor, and Clinic Coordinator.

SBHC staff are employed by various local providers including Group Health Cooperative, International Community Health Services, King County Public Health, Neighborcare, Swedish Medical Center, Seattle Children's Hospital and Odessa Brown Clinic.

Students who are enrolled in their SBHC have access to comprehensive medical and mental health care.
