Projects to replace the school buildings at Kimball Elementary School, James Baldwin Elementary School, and Viewlands Elementary School started this summer and will be complete in time for the 23-24 school year. Seismic improvements have begun for the east buildings at Lincoln High School.

Work began on the modernization and expansion project at West Seattle Elementary School. Classroom addition projects are also underway at Leschi Elementary School and Madison Middle School.

These are the first major construction projects funded by the Building Excellence V (BEX V) capital levy, which was approved by voters in February 2019. The classroom addition projects were also funded by grants from the state of Washington.

Elementary School Replacements

Demolition and site-clearing activities at Kimball and Viewlands are nearing completion. The construction team have started laying out the new building with concrete work for the new school scheduled to begin next month. School opened for both schools at interim locations — Kimball at Van Asselt School and Viewlands at John Marshall School.

At James Baldwin, changes were made over the summer in preparation for students and staff to remain on site during construction. Geothermal well installation and site grading took place on the existing field where the new school building is now being constructed. Once the school moves to the new building for the 2023-24 school year, the old building will be demolished, and new play areas will be constructed.

Lincoln Phase II

Prior to opening Lincoln High School in 2019, the historic buildings on the west side of the campus were modernized. Now phase II has begun on the east side of the Lincoln campus. This project involves seismic improvements to the gymnasium and Performing Arts Center buildings and includes adding Career and Technical Education (CTE) classrooms.

School Expansions

West Seattle Elementary School is also temporarily occupying an interim site, Schmitz Park School, while construction activities are occurring at their school building. Construction has started on the 12-classroom addition and a redesigned secure entrance. The project plans a new entry canopy, relocating the library and administration areas, and modernization of the existing classrooms. Mechanical system upgrades and a minor modernization to the existing school building will also be implemented.

The addition at Leschi Elementary School includes four new classrooms to help relieve crowding. Expanding the school will allow preschool to return.

A new two-story addition on the north side Madison Middle School will also help relieve crowding. It includes six new general classrooms, two new science classrooms, and learning support spaces.

All three addition projects are scheduled to be complete for the 2022-23 school year.
