Youth in Construction Brings Students to Montlake Project
Site Visit Introduces High School Students to Construction Careers
Students from the Kingmakers program at Franklin High School and a part of the WHOLE Mentoring program from Ingraham High School visited the construction project underway at Montlake Elementary School on April 4 with the help of Skanska’s Youth in Construction program.
Youth in Construction is a collaboration between Seattle Public Schools Office of African American Male Achievement (AAMA) and Skanska, the general contractor at Montlake. It introduces this historically underrepresented population to the wide range of careers and the competitive salaries available within the industry.
In addition to touring the project, students participated in hands-on activities and breakout sessions to learn about the different careers in the construction industry. Students engaged in building metal toolboxes, pipefitting demonstrations, and more while discovering the role virtual reality plays in construction.
Participating organizations included Skanska, DLR Architects, mechanical contractor Holaday Parks, electrical contractor JH Kelly, Iron Workers Local 86, and ConstructDiversity.
