Launch of Well-Resourced Schools Web Hub: Plans, Timeline, and Community Meetings

Summary: The Well-Resourced Schools information is now available with key information on school consolidation, timelines, a racial equity analysis, and FAQs.

Dear SPS families, staff, and community,

I’m reaching out to share an important update. Today, we launched our new Well-Resourced Schools webpages. There, you will find key information on school consolidation plans, timelines, a racial equity analysis, and FAQs. You can also submit your questions or feedback through our Let’s Talk form

Like many districts, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is facing declining enrollment and budget challenges. As a result, many of our schools are struggling to provide the resources our students deserve. To address this, we are working to ensure our schools are the right size and have the resources needed for preschool through 5th-grade students to succeed.

We are considering two plan options:

  1. Proposed Option A: Operates 52 attendance-area elementary schools. This option closes 21 elementary and K-8 schools.
  2. Proposed Option B: Operates 56 schools, including attendance-area elementary and one K-8 school per region. This option closes 17 schools.

On our website, you can explore the details of each plan, including which schools are being considered for consolidation in each region.

You will also find the criteria used for these decisions, like building conditions, learning environments, school capacity, and enrollment trends.

At SPS, we are deeply committed to ensuring that every school can meet the diverse needs of all students, including those in special education and advanced learning programs.

Key Upcoming Dates: To ensure everyone has the opportunity to understand these proposals and share feedback, we are hosting a series of meetings.

  • Sept. 11: Refreshed webpages launched with all proposals, criteria, and data.
  • Mid to Late October: Superintendent announces the preliminary recommendation.
  • November: Public hearings on each proposed school closure.
  • December: Final School Board vote before winter break.

We encourage you to explore the Well-Resourced Schools webpages, stay engaged, and share your thoughts as we navigate this important decision together. Your input is critical in shaping a stronger future for our students.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Dr. Brent Jones
