West Seattle High School Receives National Honor from Special Olympics

Summary: West Seattle High School, officially recognized by Special Olympics International as a Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School.

West Seattle High School has been officially recognized by Special Olympics International as a Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School, a prestigious honor reserved for schools demonstrating exceptional commitment to inclusion and social unity.

The award highlights the school’s efforts in creating a more inclusive environment for students of all abilities, particularly those with intellectual disabilities. West Seattle High School demonstrated their commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 national standards of excellence. These standards were developed by a national panel of leaders from Special Olympics and the education community.

Rachel Myers, a special education teacher at West Seattle High School, is the organizer for the school’s Unified Sports program. She was proud to hear their efforts have been rewarded.

“Being recognized as a Special Olympics National Banner Unified School is tremendous honor for our Unified program, school, and community,” Myers said. “Our students’ commitment to inclusion and determination to create a school community that embraces differences, creates a sense of belonging for all students, and leads for social change is the driving force behind this achievement.”

West Seattle High School joins an elite group of institutions nationwide that have been recognized for their efforts in transforming school culture and creating opportunities for all students. It is the first school in the district to receive this recognition.

In a statement, Special Olympics International expressed admiration for the leadership and dedication shown by West Seattle’s staff and students.

“Your school community has shown impressive determination and is helping us achieve our collective goal of creating a truly ‘Unified Generation’ of young people who embrace differences and lead social change,” the organization said. “You are redefining the future as you make your communities more inclusive of people with intellectual disabilities and in doing so, making the world a more accepting place for all.”

West Seattle High School’s designation as a Unified Champion School reflects its longstanding commitment to fostering an inclusive atmosphere through sports, leadership opportunities, and various activities that bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities. By promoting understanding, teamwork, and social change, the school is setting an example for others across the nation.

The school will hold a banner presentation in spring 2025 to celebrate the recognition
