In the Capital Projects and Planning department, we build healthy, safe, and secure physical environments for learning. To do so, we provide effective learning spaces and improve the function of each school. Department staff members ensure that we provide construction services effectively and efficiently.

Department goals align with the Seattle Public Schools priorities and goals, particularly by working to provide "High-Quality Instruction and Learning Experiences." Our primary goals include:

    • Strengthen and streamline capital project management
    • Wisely manage the use of building capacity
    • Enhance cost-effective use of capital resources

    Current Initiatives

We partner with other departments to meet district goals. Most of our initiatives directly relate to providing facilities that support high-quality instruction and learning experiences.

    • School construction and building improvements are funded primarily by voter-approved capital levies.
    • Building Excellence V (BEX V) Capital Levy, a six-year, $1.4 billion levy that modernizes or replaces eight aging schools, plans for the future, invests in technology, and improves building systems and athletic fields.
    • Buildings, Technology, and Academics/Athletics IV (BTA IV) Capital Levy, a six-year, $475.3 million levy providing funds for renovation, major maintenance, and health and safety improvements; technology classroom equipment and instructional support to enhance student learning; academics projects to meet the educational requirements and needs of students; and athletic improvements to upgrade fields
    • Building Excellence IV Program, a six-year, $694.9 million levy that replaces/renovates/builds 17 schools

We are proud to see principals, teachers, and students using newly renovated or constructed buildings and new systems to enrich the learning experience. In Fall 2019, we celebrated:

    • Opening of newly modernized Lincoln High School
    • Opening of expanded and modernized Magnolia Elementary School
    • Opening of a new addition at Queen Anne Elementary
    • Opening of a new addition at Ingraham High School
