    What is JUMP START?

Jump Start is a FREE week-long experience for Kindergartners to learn about school. Children will become familiar with their new school building, staff, typical school day activities and practices. Their parents/guardians will be able to meet with the school principal and ask questions about school. Teachers start to build relationships with students and observe their skills and strengths. Read about signs of a successful transition to Kindergarten

Jump Start aims to help young children:

    • Experience joyful learning
    • Learn school readiness behaviors
    • Become more comfortable with the school environment

When and Where is JUMP START?

Jump Start will take place August 19-23, 2019. The school district encourages all elementary and K-8 schools to offer Jump Start and provides extra funds to cover the costs of this program, which occurs before the school year officially begins. Ask about Jump Start when you tour schools or attend open houses.

    Schools Participating in Jump Start

Each school collects and manages its own Jump Start registrations. Registrations sent to Seattle Public Schools will be forwarded to the appropriate school.

See a list of participating schools.

All new kindergartners assigned to these schools are invited to attend Jump Start. Other aspects of the program:

    • Jump Start runs from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. each morning for one week
    • The school principal meets with parents one morning and many schools offer additional activities for parents
    • Bilingual staff assist children who are English-language learners
    • Extra support is offered for children with special needs
    • Some schools offer breakfast and lunch to Jump Start students and their siblings/friends up to age 18 through the City's Summer Food Service Program
    • No transportation is provided, so families need to drop off and pick up children each day. Some childcare programs located in or near schools can help with drop off/pickup.

How do we register for JUMP START?

You can register for Jump Start in several ways:

    1. When completing the online registration for schools, kindergarten families are directed to a Jump Start registration link. Just download and complete the form. If your child will be attending your neighborhood school, please send your completed registration there. If you are awaiting a placement at a "choice" or "option" school, please send it to the school once you have been notified of your child's assignment (late April/early May) or to jumpstart@seattleschools.orgNote: Students may attend Jump Start only at their assigned school.  Wait-listed students are to attend Jump Start at their assigned school.
    2. If you register your child for school, please complete the Jump Start registration and  mail it to your child's school. While we prefer to receive forms prior to Jump Start, you may also bring your child to school on the first day of Jump Start and turn in forms then.
    3. Important: if your child needs medicine at school, please also complete a Medication at School form and send it to your child's school as soon as possible so that health plans can be put in place prior to Jump Start week. Parent/guardian will need to remain at school during Jump Start until appropriate health plans are in place. Below are health record forms needed to give students medication at school.
