Deputy Superintendent Stephen Nielsen was recently recognized by the Washington Association of School Business Officials (WASBO) with the John Jenft Outstanding Service to K-12 Education Award.

Stephen was recognized for his continuous commitment and advocacy for education funding and student achievement. This is the highest award presented by the organization, which serves to provide programs and best practices of school business management and the effective use of educational resources in the state.

As deputy superintendent, Stephen provides leadership for the district’s daily operations and oversees implementation of services and programs. WASBO recognized Stephen’s collaborative work in serving on the statewide working group, creating the framework for increased education funding that has been passed by the legislature.

He served as the WASBO Legislative Affairs Networking Group Chair for two years and continued to be an active support to the group for years after. Highly respected for his knowledge and leadership, he has been involved in every major K-12 funding policy over the last 20 years. Stephen’s financial policy expertise is often called on by legislators, and statewide associations during legislative sessions.
