Physical Education Teachers Receive Training and Equipment at Safeco Field

On April 18, elementary and middle school physical education specialists used their professional development time for an exciting training opportunity at Safeco Field with members of the Seattle Mariners and USA Baseball through the Fun At Bat program.

Fun At Bat is an introductory baseball program for kids that can be easily implemented into existing curriculum and emphasizes positive character development, functional movement, literacy and active play and fun.

In addition to the professional learning provided for educators, each school will receive a Franklin equipment kit and access to standards-based digital lesson plans for grades K-5. While all SPS K-5 schools offer physical education, the lessons and activities may vary based on availability of existing equipment and curriculum and often must be adaptable for space and weather conditions.

Physical Education and Health Literacy Program Manager Lori Dunn organized the day's activities and said of the partnership, “This incredible opportunity ensures all our K-5 students have the chance to use baseball and softball as a way to learn about healthy lifestyles and physical activity, which builds upon the foundational curriculum in the physical education program in Seattle Public Schools."

SPS is one of the first school districts in the nation to benefit from this special collaboration between Major League Baseball, USA Baseball, SHAPE America and Franklin Sports, and it is the first to hold a department’s professional development at a major league stadium, thanks to the Mariners On BASE (baseball and softball everywhere) program. This local program aims to make baseball and softball accessible to all young athletes regardless of the barriers they may face.

Ms. Dunn voiced gratitude on behalf of the district: “We are grateful for the Fun At Bat program, which allows all students to experience baseball during the school day in every physical education classroom.”
