Career Connect at Home Throughout the Month of May

While teaching and learning may look different right now, students are still learning at home! Career and Technical Education (CTE) educators have risen to the challenge of school building closures and have been delivering hands-on learning virtually.

Throughout the month of May, students and teachers in Seattle Public Schools have an opportunity to learn about jobs and careers from employers across Washington state, starting May 4. Career Connect Washington is sponsoring CareerConnect@Home, an exciting opportunity for students to explore careers online. There will be live sessions each day in a variety of industries and careers, and you can visit the CareerConnect@Home website to see each day’s lineup and join the conversation!

    Weekly Themes

Each week will have a specific industry theme:

    • Week 1 (May 4 – May 8): "Technology and Innovation Week:" Technology and Information, including how graphic design, pharmaceuticals, and real estate companies stay connected.
    • Week 2 (May 11 – May 15): "Building Washington Week:" Manufacturing, Construction, Energy. Hear from carpenters, automotive technicians, manufacturers, and energy producers about their careers and how they help build our communities.
    • Week 3 (May 18 – May 22): "Be a Boss Week:" Entrepreneurship and Start-ups, including clothing rental, technology, culinary, and internet companies who started small and grew their businesses in smart and innovative ways.
    • Week 4 (May 25 – May 29): "Lead Your Community Week:" Education, Health Care, Government, Non-profits (note: no session on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25). You’ll hear from local leaders, health care professionals, researchers, and news organizations about how they lead in our community.
    • May 27 will feature a 'daily double' (two Healthcare Zoom panels of professionals) from the Seattle Healthcare Industry Leadership Table (HILT) and Industry partners with SPS and our Health and Medical Pathway.

Each session will be hosted live on YouTube where students can ask questions about what it’s like to work in technology, auto repair, journalism, health care, and more. Each day’s session is at 3:30 p.m. PST and will last less than an hour. The content will be developed for students in grades 7-12 in collaboration with the employers and teachers. CTE includes every type of industry and organization, which can benefit all SPS students who are thinking about their future careers. In order to ensure that the programming is secure, only employer hosts will have access to the audio and video stream.
