District Racial Equity Teams Gather for First Institute of the School Year

The John Stanford Center was packed on the first Saturday in November, with over 100 participants from teams representing schools across the district who joined together to partake in the first Racial Equity Institute of the 2018-19 school year.

The purpose of the institute? To understand the roles and responsibilities of the district’s Racial Equity Teams under Policy 0030 Ensuring Educational and Racial Equity, deepen awareness of institutional and structural racism, and strengthen teamwork among colleagues and Seattle Education Association Center for Race & Equity Partners.

Racial Equity Team (RET) members represent educators across all levels; classroom teachers, education support professionals, principals, instructional assistants, parents, students, and community partners.

Team cohorts, referred to in Phases, have rolled out approximately 10 teams per year since the roll out of officially designated Racial Equity Team work. At the November 3 Institute, Phase Five teams were inducted, bringing the total number across the district to 50 teams out of 104 schools. Though the Saturday Institute was intended for new teams and new team members, veteran teams were also in attendance, as well as prospective cohorts.

“The work of racial equity advancement can only get done through collaboration, with alignment across the system,” shares Concie Pedroza, Seattle Public Schools Director of Racial Equity Advancement. “We selected 10 teams this year, from 26 applications, and they keep growing. This is the village work. We are the village.”

Returning to their school communities, RETs will work in partnership with school leadership and building leadership teams to look at school-wide decision making through an equity lens, where they will review hiring processes, staff and student handbooks, student procedures, and professional development for staff.

During the school year, the district will convene racial equity teams two more times for new teams and twice more for an all-cohort gathering. Each convening seeks to build schools’ capacity towards actionable change anchored in racial equity practices across Seattle Public Schools.
