West Woodland Elementary School Addition Project

Construction of an addition to West Woodland Elementary School starts this summer. Besides adding 28,000 square feet, parts of the existing building will be remodeled to better meet the needs of the school.

“The addition and remodel will bring in 12 new classrooms, an expanded gymnasium, and a new commons/lunchroom area,” said Paul Wight, the district’s project manager. “The rest of the school building will have new finishes such as paint, tile, and flooring.”

Technology and infrastructure improvements are also included. The school community and the neighbors will enjoy improved landscaping and play areas.

The first step requires removing the existing portable classrooms, which began on Thursday, May 28, 2020. Cranes lifted the portables to a holding area. They will be moved to new locations in early morning hours. Construction is scheduled to begin in early July and continue through summer of 2021.

The current building opened in 1991 and replaced the original school building. Enlarging the school will help address the growing number of students in the neighborhood.

West Woodland Elementary School is moving to the interim site at John Marshall School for the construction period. The school community will return to their building in Fall 2021.
