The Seattle School Board voted Wednesday in favor of naming two new school buildings on the Wilson-Pacific site. The new middle school building is named Robert Eagle Staff Middle School and the new elementary school building is named Cascadia Elementary School. Both schools are being constructed and scheduled to open in 2017.

The new 1,000 seat middle school is named in honor of Robert Eagle Staff, the former principal of Indian Heritage High School, which was housed in the former Wilson-Pacific building. Mr. Eagle Staff was a highly respected and much loved principal from 1989-1996, leaving a legacy of inspiration for ensuring the best for Native American learners. The new middle school will be the home of middle school attendance area students as well as the Licton Springs K-8 program. Native American murals and memorial areas will become part of the new building, to be located on the spiritually significant site under which Licton Springs flows.

The new 660 seat elementary school building is named Cascadia Elementary School and will house the north end APP program when it opens. Cascadia is the name that describes the connected ecological, environmental, economic, and cultural ties that are prevalent throughout the Pacific Northwest. The Cascadia bioregion is a geographically based area defined by land and soil composition, watershed, climate, flora, and fauna. It's also considered to include the associated ocean and seas and their ecosystems all the way out to the continental slope.

The year-long naming process for both schools included community meetings, requests for nominations of names and feedback from present and future students and their families, school staff, the two schools' building leadership teams, neighbors, community councils and the greater general public. The names for both schools received overwhelming support. Superintendent Nyland considered all input and feedback and recommended the names to the School Board for approval: the Board vote was unanimous for each name.

Jon Halfaker, the Executive Director of Schools for Seattle Schools' northwest region said this about the new middle school name; “The extensive community engagement naming process has resulted in majority support to honor the accomplishments and legacy of a great educator, Robert Eagle Staff.”

Rina Geoghagan, the planning principal for Cascadia and present north end APP principal, said; “the students, staff, families and the greater community have overwhelmingly voiced their approval of the name Cascadia Elementary and we are excited to move into the new school when it opens in fall 2017.
