    2020-21 Remote Learning Task Force

    Please note: on October 7, the School Board voted to approve a name change from Reopening Plan Task Force to the 2020-21 Remote Learning Task Force.

    The Superintendent is forming a task force for the Reopening Plan and Remote Learning model, per Substitute Resolution 2020/21-4.

    The 2020-21 Remote Learning Task Force will monitor the progress, implementation, and efficacy of the reopening plan and remote learning model. The task force will advise the School Board and Superintendent Juneau throughout the 2020-21 school year on possible revisions and continuous improvement.

    Goals, Vision, and Purpose

    Goals of the task force: The RLTF is an essential component of Seattle Public Schools' (SPS) commitment to ensuring that authentic community feedback and accountability are a normative part of SPS' operation and decision-making throughout these unprecedented times. The vision for the work of the task force includes:

    1. To monitor the progress, implementation, and efficacy of the reopening plan and remote learning model.
    2. To monitor the implementation of the guidance provided to educators in the SPS Remote Learning Playbook and advise the School Board and Superintendent Juneau throughout the 2020-21 school year on possible revisions and continuous improvements.
    3. To establish recommendations for how the district should change, adjust or remain constant in current policies, procedures, processes practices, and procedures to ensure and prioritize equitable access to high-quality instruction and supports during remote learning.

    The purpose of the task force is to: The task force will consider and develop recommendations informed by current Seattle Public School practices and results, including the history of services that continue to impact procedures and practices today.

    In short, the task force will strive to identify and prescribe innovative and creative approaches that meet the academic, socioemotional, and behavioral needs of students in Seattle Public Schools.


    Remote Learning Task Force Membership and Selection

    To ensure the Remote Learning Task Force is successful, SPS will recruit and prioritize community members who have firsthand experience, documented work histories, and direct relationships with students furthest away from educational justice. SPS will particularly seek individuals with experience in relevant areas such as remote learning, racial equity, academic research, and information management, and will strive to have geographic, racial, and gender diversity. The goal is to be selective of applicants to ensure there is a balance of perspectives and backgrounds, including voices that are traditionally marginalized in SPS decision-making. To the greatest extent possible, this Task Force will represent the diverse population of Seattle Public Schools’ students and families, and will be comprised of educators, principals, parents/guardians, community members, and staff members from various backgrounds and departments at the John Stanford Center for Educational Excellence.

    The Task Force will be made up of approximately 20 individuals.

    Selection Process

    1. Pre-screening of applications: a team narrowed down the applicants based on qualifications. Applicants who did not meet the basic criteria (for example, missing or incomplete answers in the application, duplicate applications, etc.) were removed. Then, a rubric was used to score remaining applicants. This rubric included a 4-point scale in the following areas: Racial Equity, Positionality, and Interest/Motivation. At least two (2) screeners reviewed each application. Identifiers such as name, location, and demographics were removed prior to pre-screening applicants.

    2. Review of applications: a review committee of SPS staff reviewed the applicants who advanced through the pre-screening process and determined approximately 20 applicants whose responses best reflect SPS Foundational Beliefs and the Remote Learning Task Force Charterpdf icon.

    3. Confirmation of applicants to the Remote Learning Task Force – applicants selected for the task force will be contacted, confirmed, and welcomed by the superintendent. The first meeting will occur remotely during the last week of October.
