Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: A Tribute to Black Excellence in Seattle Public Schools

As we approach Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it is both an honor and a responsibility to reflect on the profound impact of a visionary leader who dedicated his life to a pursuit of justice and equality that transcends generations.

Dr. King once said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”

In Seattle Public Schools, we are committed to fostering an environment that not only provides academic excellence but also nurtures the development of strong character and compassion in our students.

Let us draw inspiration from Dr. King as we reflect on the progress we have made and the work that lies ahead. Dr. King’s dream of a society where individuals are judged by their character rather than the color of their skin remains at the heart of our mission to create an inclusive and equitable educational experience for every student.

Our district is fortunate to be home to a community of talented and dedicated individuals who contribute to the rich tapestry of Black excellence. Our students, educators, and staff exemplify the values that Dr. King championed. They embody his resilience, determination, and the pursuit of excellence in all their endeavors.

In celebrating Dr. King’s legacy, we also celebrate the achievements of our students who are making a difference in their classrooms, schools, and beyond. Their talents and contributions enrich the fabric of our schools and remind us of the collective strength that arises from embracing diversity.

In the spirit of unity, let us use Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a catalyst for positive change within our schools and broader community. Together, we can build a future that reflects the principles of justice, equality, and the shared dream of a better world for all.

Sincerely,

Superintendent Brent Jones
